Mod Fringe Programme
The Blas Festival held at the Weigh Inn on Saturday 11th September was the venue for officially launching the Mòd Fringe programme. Attending the event were representatives from the organisations who have supported the Local Organising Committee of the Mòd (LOC) through funding.
Randall Bargelt (Nuclear Decommissioning Authority), John Henderson (LEADER Highland) and Charles Findlay (Highlands & Islands Enterprise) met with Alex Patience and a number of the LOC Fringe committee members who have organised the different events organised for the week of the Royal National Mòd, 8th Oct – 16th Oct 2010. The NDA provided £60,000 of funding with a further £40,000 coming from LEADER Highland. Highlands and Islands Enterprise are providing funding of £70,000 towards the overall event.
Alex Patience, Convenor of the Mòd Fringe said “Without the support of the Fringes’ three main funders NDA, LEADER and HIE, putting together a full programme of exciting events would not have been possible. I am also happy to say the local community and smaller organisations have also given us crucial support. The support we have received has been amazing. The young people of Fèis Ghallaibh, who performed their first professional gig at Blas along with fabulous performers like Breabach and the James Graham Trio, helped spread the word that Caithness has a lot to celebrate about on it’s doorstep.”
Randall Bargelt, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority said “The NDA, as part of the Caithness & North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership, is delighted to have been able to support the local organising committee to put together a great programme for the week of the Mòd. “We wanted to make sure that there is a lasting economic legacy from having this important national festival come to the county. The organisers’ first success was attracting the National Mòd here in the first place. They have put together a great programme of events and are taking the opportunity to promote the local area to the Mòd visitors by showing them the best that Caithness has to offer, ensuring that they have a lasting memory of their visit. “Caithness has spectacular natural resources, good local businesses and a vibrant community. A successful Mòd week will provide a unique opportunity to share the best of it and make sure the visitors spread the word about all the great things that Caithness has to offer.”
John Henderson, Chairman of LEADER for the Caithness area agreed and added, “This was a perfect example of what LEADER can provide funding for. It allows the area to promote itself as a great holiday destination and hopefully by hosting the Mòd we will encourage more people to come back time and time again. The LEADER committee had no hesitation in approving the release of funding for this ambitious programme of events during the Mòd.”
Charles Findlay, Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE), who are sponsoring An Comunn Gaidhealach and a creative display to link with Fringe activity, said “HIE is pleased to provide funding to An Comunn Gaidhealach to help bring the Royal National Mod to Caithness for the first time. HIE, not only looks at growing businesses, it also supports strengthening communities and this is a perfect example of that. “HIE has recently produced a Gaelic plan and the Royal National Mod represents an opportunity to this area in terms of both community and economic development. The local organisation committee should be congratulated on the amount of work that each individual involved has put into the organisation of the Mod and also to the fringe events. We can look forward to a very successful week.”
Convenor of the LOC, Raymond Bremner, was in attendance at the Mull Provincial Mòd, at the same time as the launch in Caithness, where the programme was released at one of the biggest local Mòd attendances in the run-up to the National Event in Caithness. He said “The Mull Mòd, being one of the forward thinking local Mòds, was a perfect event to launch the Caithness Mòd Fringe Programme. There was a real buzz at the Mull Mòd with people highly delighted to receive the programme in good time to allow them to assist in forward planning their visit to the county next month. With the BBC and other media in attendance we attracted some very welcome attention. We have a lot to thank the Fringe organisers for, and I hope that locals and visitors will take part in as many of the events as possible.”
The Fringe programme will be distributed nationally and locally over the next few weeks or can be found on the Mòd website at www,caithnessMòd2010.co.uk

Wick To Host Scotland's National Youth Pipe Band
The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland is bringing its exciting sell out performance of The Dragon’s Lair to the Wick Assembly Rooms on Friday 23rd July at 1900 hours. The Dragon’s Lair showcases the band’s exciting and edgy blend of traditional and contemporary new material. The show’s fusion of pipes and drums with electric guitar, keyboard synthesizer, stand p bass, fiddle and drum kit pushes the boundaries of the stereotypical pipe band concert making it a must see show for all fans of Celtic music. During the day workshops will be held at the Wick Pipe Band Hall and at the Royal British Legion, Thurso from 10:00 to 15:00 hrs for local pipers and drummers up to the age of 25. A taster session will also take place for aspiring pipers/drummers from 12:30 to 13:30 hours. The workshops are free and offer an opportunity for young players to come and learn from the experienced musicians. People interested in attending should phone 0141 353 0220 to register their attendance. Carol-Anne Mackay, Event Support Officer to the Local Organising Committee of Mòd Ghallaibh 2010 said “This is a wonderful opportunity for those who are learning to play the pipes or drums or even those who are thinking about it but haven’t quite made up their minds yet. “The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland was launched in 2002 and s the first and only organisation of this kind to bring together Scotland’s most talented young musicians at a national level. Their experience is second to none and this presents a wonderful opportunity for those in Caithness to go along and learn from them. “Hopefully some of our young people who will be competing in the piping competitions at the National Mòd on the 9th October will make good use of this unique offer of a workshop.” Tickets will be available on the door for this fantastic show and are £8 adults /£6 concessions. Doors will open at 1830 hrs.

Not to be outdone a further 14 volunteers undertook a sponsored walk from Calder to Dorerry Hill and back and have raised in the region of £1000.
Local ceilidhs have been organised, the most recent held in Scotscalder on the 25th June featuring Alasdair Bain, with the Clachnabrochan Ceilidh Band adding to the balance. Further ceilidhs will take place in August as well as the Mòd hosting the Blas Festival concert in the Weigh Inn, Thurso on 11th September.
Other events which have added to the fundraising total was a charity bingo session and disco held in March and April, and donations are coming in from various organisations including the Edinburgh Caithness Society, Wester Ross branch of An Comunn Gaidhealach, Victor Fraser Accountants and Thrumster based Mackenzie Removals.
Raymond Bremner, Convenor of the local organising committee said, “The fund raising support we have received has been fantastic. There are a lot of people doing all sorts of things to help. We are grateful to everyone who has taken part in the fund raising activities and also to those who have sponsored these events. Without these funds it would be impossible to host the Mòd in Caithness and we want to ensure that those who are attending the Mòd in October leave with a long-lasting positive impression of their time in Caithness.”

Music Memory Store - Philip Todd
|
MusicMemory Store – Philip Todd Philip Todd is studying film and television at the RSAMD in Glasgow. He has many interests and passions but his ultimate dream is to be a film director, make good films and maybe change the world… even just a little bit. He loves to sing and since learning his first Gaelic song in 2007 he has enjoyed performing and competing quite regularly. He won the Silver Pendant in 2009, and he has also started learning to speak the language. At the Royal National Mòd in 2008 he came first in a traditional competition with the song An Eala Bhàn. Dual [CD] (Machair Records; Released Oct 2008 - A collaborative exploration of traditional Irish and Scottish music by Éamon Doorley, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Julie Fowlis and Ross Martin. A very popular Mòd song for soloists and choirs, this song was written whist fighting in France during the Great War, by the famous North Uist bard, Donald MacDonald (1887-1967) known as Dòmhnall Ruadh Chorùna (Red Donald of Coruna). He was a legendary war poet in the Scottish Gaelic language. |
|
I like visual storytelling. I like cinema. I like ‘An Eala Bhàn’ because it is cinematic. Images in and of themselves can be powerful but cinema is about the contrasting of images to create meaning and emotion. ‘An Eala Bhàn’ is meaningful, emotive and visual. In it we have the high misty mountains, the glens, the lochs and the white swan, contrasted with cannon’s roar, smoke, and the trenches. A woman in a warm, sweet-smelling bed waking happy, whole… contrasted with a man sick at heart, losing hope of ever winning through. He is imbued with such utter longing, that his hair which once grew ginger has now turned all but white. When I hear or sing this song I somehow understand the emotions being communicated because I feel them just as Dòmhnall Ruadh Chorùna felt them. I am there in the freezing trench, I am gazing westwards and I am longing for home, and for her. The words and the melody blend together to create images, and spark feelings. Surely this is the magic of music. ‘An Eala Bhàn’ is an emotional journey of longing, a meaningful ballad of images: a visual story. |
| Is toigh leam sgeulachd fhaicsinneach. Is toigh leam an taigh-dealbh. Is toigh leam ‘An Eala Bhàn’ oir is e òran dealbhach a tha ann.Tha ìomhaighean gu math cumhachdach annta fhèin ach tha fiolm a’ cur ìomhaighean an aghaidh a chèile airson faireachdainnean agus smuaintean ùra a chruthachadh. Tha an t-òran ‘An Eala Bhàn’ brìoghmhor, gluasadach agus dealbhach. Tha am bàrd a’ sgrìobhadh mu bheanntan àrda, ceòthach, mu ghlìnn, lochan agus an eala bhàn. Tha sin gu tur eadar-dhealaichte ri fuaim a’ ghunna mhòir, ri toit agus na trainnsichean. Tha boireannach ann an leabaidh chùbhraidh bhlàth a’ dùsgadh toilichte, slàn... gu math eadar-dhealaichte ri fear briste na bhodhaig, a’ call a mhisneachd nach fhaigh e às is nach buannaich e.The e air a lìonadh cho mòr le fadachd gu bheil fhalt a bha uaireiginn meirgeach ruadh cha mhòr geal.Nuair a chluinneas mi an t-òran seo neo a sheinneas mi e tha mi a’ tuigsinn na faireachaidhean a tha a’ tighinn tarsainn dìreach mar a dh’fhairich Dòmhnall Ruadh Chorùna iad. Tha mi an sin anns na trainnsichean fuar, reòdhta, tha mi ag amharc dhan ìar agus tha mi a’ miannachadh a bhith aig an taigh agus a bhith faisg oirrese. Tha na focail is am fonn a’ tighinn gu chèile a’ cruthachadh ìomhaighean agus ag ath-bheòthachadh faireachaidhean. Nach e seo mìorbhail ciùil?
An Eala Bhàn – òran a tha drùidhteach le cianalas, òran làn de dh’ìomhaighean tuigseach: sgeul fhaicsinneach. |

| The Piper and the Shrew, Almost an Island (CD), Wolfstone Released on Once Bitten Records Catalogue OBRCD002
This track has a sleepy cinematic start which gears up into a wild fiddle and crashing pipes. For those of you who are 21 this year, you are the same age as the Scottish band, Wolfstone. For those of us going to Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, we will get the chance to see and hear this band live on Aug 7th. Stalwarts of the band are fiddler, Duncan Chisholm, guitarist, Stuart Eaglesham and long term piper, Stevie Saint. |
| I first heard the band Wolfstone during my time at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music. Their early albums were very popular among many of the students. I was lucky enough to receive a one to one lesson from the Wolfstone fiddler Duncan Chisholm, in which he taught me the tune ‘The Piper and the Shrew’. That weekend, my band from school supported Wolfstone at a concert in Kyleakin Hall, Skye. We played a few sets and songs before joining the audience to watch Wolfstone play. It was a great gig and we got to share a dressing room with the band backstage. We each got a t-shirt, which the band signed, and their newest CD ‘Almost an Island’. My strongest memory is of ‘The Piper and the Shrew’, which was performed during the gig and I enjoyed it more having learnt it directly from Duncan. The performance gave our band inspiration to make our own arrangement of the tune, and it became a popular set at many of our own gigs. The CD is still a favourite of mine and Duncan Chisholm remains to be a great influence in my own fiddle playing. |
| Chuala mi an còmhlan Wolfstone an toiseach nuair a bha mi an Sgoil Chiùil na Gàidhealtachd sa Phloc. Chòrd na clàir a chuir iad a-mach an toiseach ri na h-oileanaich. Bha mise air leth fortanach gun d’fhuair mi m’ oideachadh leam fhìn cuide ri fidhleir Wolfstone, Donnchadh Siosalach. Dh’ionnsaich e am fonn “The Piper and the Shrew” dhomh.Aig an deireadh-sheachdain sin chluich an còmhlan bhon sgoil cuide ri Wolfstone an Talla a’ Chaoil, san Eilean Sgitheanach. Chluich sinn beagan sheataichean is òrain mun deachaidh sinn gan èisteachd. Is e gig air leth math a bh’ ann agus bha sinn cuide ris a’ chòmhlan san rùm-deisealachaidh. Fhuair gach aon againn t-shirt le ainm a’ chòmhlain is an CD ùr ‘Almost an Island’.Tha cuimhne nas fheàrr agam air “The Piper and the Shrew” bhon chluichear e aig a’ ghig agus chòrd e rium na bu mhotha a chionn gun d’ ionnsaich mi am fonn dìreach bho Dhonnchadh fhèin. Bhrosnaich an ceòl sinn gu fonn ùr a dheasachadh air a shon agus chluich sinn e gu math tric aig na gigs againn fhìn. Is toil leam an CD seo fhathast agus bidh Donnchadh Siosalach na fhear a thug buaidh mhòr air an fhìdhlearachd agam fhìn. |

Scots, Gaelic and the Traditional Arts are core interests as are nuclear disarmament, affordable housing and saving consultant led services in the NHS. He was born and educated in Glasgow, and attended Dundee University and Education College. Since early retirement, or early ‘relifement’ as he would like to call it, he has developed his historical training and skills by writing the book 'Plaids and Bandanas'. He joined the SNP in 1966, was FSN President from 1970-1973 and has been a member of the SNP's National Council, Executive and Cabinet. |
| Folk who know my musical tastes would expect me to choose a big Gaelic song of love and loss, but so many fine singers to choose from. So here’s an Irish love song ‘Jimmy Mo Mhíle Stór’ in which no one dies. I first heard Dolores Keane’s version in her fine album from 1983 ‘Sail Óg Rua’ from which she sang at the Inverness Folk Festival. Those in the know from around the north were present and were aghast that she wasn’t afforded an encore! It tells of a lassie’s praise for her young man. But ‘A year ago my heart’s love left me/for faraway places/he’ll never return/until he sees the wide world around….’ (maybe). Fast forward to the 20th Highland Traditional Music Festival – Fleadh Ciùil Bhaile Chàil in 2001 in the National Hotel, Dingwall. Iain MacDonald, Glenuig and Ian MacFarlane, Glenfinann mounted a special ‘and friends’ band for the main concert spot. What a surprise, a stunning new Gaelic voice came to the stage. Kathleen MacInnes from South Uist starred in ‘The Interrogation of a Highland Lassie’ as Kay Matheson, one of the four students who liberated the Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey at Christmas 1950. She sant two songs in the play. However, in Dingwall the unmistakable husky catch in her throat delivered an arresting and very fresh vocal sound to an outstanding band that special night. Imagine the thrill on hearing Kathleen’s first album Òg-Mhadainn Shamhraidh – Summer Dawn released in Spring 2006. She covered ‘Jimmy Mo Mhíle Stór’ in a Scots Gaelic translation by her friend Seonag Monk making a lovely bridge from the original Irish into our own branch of Gaelic. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It’s a gem in our inter-celtic musical heritage. |
| Bidh dùil aig mo luchd-eòlais ri òran mòr Gàidhlig mu ghaol agus call, ach tha uimhir a sheinneadearan ann airson taghadh a dheanamh. Seo òran gaoil Eireannach ‘Jimmy Mo Mhile Stór’, far nach eil neach a’ bàsachadh. Chuala mi Dolores Keane a’ seinn an òrain an toiseach air a’ chlàr sgoinneil aice ‘ Sail Óg Rua’ an 1983. Sheinn i an t-òran aig Fèis Inbhir Nis. Bha iomadach neach an làthair a ghabh uabhas nach d’fhuair i encore!Tha an t-òran mu nighinn a’ moladh a leannain. Ach ‘Bliadhna air ais dh’fhalbh leannan mo chrìdh airson tìrean cèin/ cha till e tuilleadh/ gus am faic e an saoghal fad is farsainn gu lèir......’ ( is dòcha)Air adhart gu grad chun an 20amh Fèis Ciùil Traidiseanta na Gàidhealtachd – Fleadh Ciùil Bhaile Chàil an 2001 san taigh-òsta an National an Inbhir Pheofharain. Chuir Iain Dòmhnallach, Gleann Ùige, Iain MacPhàrlain, Gleann Fhionnan, còmhlan ‘lè caraidean’ air chois airson prìomh-cluich na h-oidhche.. Thàinig an guth Gàidhlig ùr seo oirnn gun fhiosta - Kathleen NicAonghais - bho Uibhist a Deas. Bha i ann an ‘Interrogation of a Highland Lassie’ an riochd Kay Nic Mhathain, aon den cheathrar oileanach a leig mu sgaoil Clach Sgàin bho Abbey Westminster aig am na Nollaig 1950. Sheinn i dà òran san dealbh-chluich. Ach cò-dhiù, an oidhche ud an Inbhir Pheofhairean, sheinn i leis a’ ghuth shònraichte aice, fuaim ùrail, glan a dh’fhàg oidhche nach dì-chuimhnich mi, cuide ri còmhlan air leth math.Smaoinich an toileachas nuair a chualas a’ chiad chlàr aig Kathleen - Òg-Mhadainn Shamhraidh - san Earrach 2006. Sheinn I ‘Jimmy Mo Mhile Stór’, air eadar-theangachadh gu Gàidhlig Alba le Seonag Mhonk, a caraid, ceangal àlainn bho |

Music Memory Store - Angus Millar
|
MusicMemory Store – Angus Millar ‘Mo Mhathair’ – Sailing Up the Clyde & Songs of Scotland & Ireland; (CD) Calum Kennedy, Beltona Records. Re-released: 2003, Beltona 101. Calum Kennedy won his Gold Medal at the Royal National Mod, Aberdeen in 1955. This album is a true collection of well-loved oldies but goldies of Scottish songs and well worth hearing the effortless liquid voice of Calum Kennedy in this CD which has all the songs from his two early Beltona LP’s. |
| Angus Millar is a native of Brora in Sutherland and has been teaching Gaelic at Farr High School in Bettyhill for the past six years. He combines his passion for the Gaelic language with a passion for the Gaelic sport, shinty, and coaches the youngsters at Farr in the game. On Oct 9th for the Mòd shinty matches, Angus will be in charge of the North Sutherland Primary team, Farr High School Secondary team, and assistant coach for the Sutherland Senior team ... a busy day! |
| When I was younger I used to make frequent visits to the island of Lewis. The place made a great impression on me; it had a kind of magic that was created by a combination of the people, the landscape, the language and the culture. Various Gaelic musicians remind me of these days but none more so than Calum Kennedy, who himself hailed from the Isle of Lewis. Not only did Calum Kennedy have a fine voice, but he could convey the emotion of a song like no other. Phil Cunningham tells the story of a loud post concert gathering at the Glasgow Celtic Connections festival. Calum turned up and was persuaded to sing a Gaelic song. Phil says that at the close of the song 'there wasn't a dry eye in the house'. Of all his Gaelic songs I like 'Mo Mhathair' the best because of its beautiful melody and lyrics, and because of the sentiments it contains about a very special person ... mo mhathair. |
| Nuair a bha mise na b’ òige bhithinn a’ dol tric do dh’Eilean Leòdhais. Dhrùidh an t-àite gu mòr orm; bha rudeigin anns na daoine, an àrainneachd, an cànan is an cultar a bha cho taitneach dhomh. Tha mòran de luchd-ciùil a’ toirt nam chuimhne na làithean sin ach tha aon fhear sònraichte ann agus is e sin Calum Ceanadach. Is e Leòdhasach a bh’ ann fhèin. Chan e a-mhàin gun robh guth air leth math aige ach chuireadh e blas is brìgh an òrain tarsainn mar nach cuireadh aon eile. Bidh Phil Cunningham ag aithris mu chuirm-ciùil fhuaimneach an dèidh Fèis Celtic Connections an Glaschu. Thionndaidh Calum suas is thug iad air òran Gàidhlig a sheinn. Thuirt Phil, nuair a sguir Calum a sheinn, nach robh sùil thioram san talla.Dhe na h-òrain aig Calum is e Mo Mhàthair as fheàrr leam a chionn gu bheil am fonn is na facail a’ cur tarsainn iomhaighean inntinneach mu phearsa air leth....mo mhàthair. |

Local Workshops Help Business Prepare for the Mod
Over 50 people, representing local business, took part in workshops to prepare themselves for welcoming an influx of visitors who plan to attend the Royal National Mòd 2010.
The workshops, hosted by North Highland Tourism, the Mòd local organising committee and the Caithness Chamber of Commerce, set out what businesses can expect when those attending the Mòd arrive in the county.
Following feedback from the workshops North Highland Tourism has organised four introductory Gaelic language sessions which will take place in Wick and Thurso during June and September.
Jill McNicol, North Highland Tourism Manager, said “The workshops held in April were extremely well attended and the feedback provided showed there was a willingness to learn the basics of the Gaelic language in order to welcome the influx of visitors which will undoubtedly arrive in the county in October. We hope these sessions will be well attended.”
Trudy Morris, Caithness Chamber of Commerce, added “Those who attended the workshops saw the obvious advantages of gearing up to support the Mòd. The Mòd will have a huge impact on tourism in our area and we should capitalise on this opportunity. If we make a good impression then I am sure the Mòd will leave a lasting legacy for our tourism industry. Given that tourism is one of the high priority areas within the Caithness & North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership (CNSRP) we have the opportunity to leave a lasting impression on those visiting and hopefully they will think about Caithness and North Sutherland as a great holiday destination for the future.”
Raymond Bremner, Convenor of the local organising committee said “There is a potential for over 8,000 people to arrive in the county to attend or take part in the Mòd. We already know that accommodation is at a premium and we would urge anyone who still has vacancies for the October week to get in touch with us so we can make sure that those requiring assistance in finding accommodation know what is still available.
The hotels, restaurants and drinking establishments are going to have a busy time. People attending the Mòd will have tight timescales to eat/drink and return in time to the different competitions and events that are going on. Professional and efficient service is going to be essential to cope with, what will undoubtedly be, a huge demand. We have already heard that some businesses are gearing up to employ additional staff to cope with what will be a very busy week”
The workshops,“Gaelic for Hospitality and Tourism” – a Gaelic starter course, will be hosted by North Highland Tourism and will be held on Tuesday 15th June and Tuesday 14 September. Further details can be obtained from North Highland Tourism.

Mod 2010 - Music Memory Store
|
MusicMemory Store – James Ross |
| James Ross is from Wick and was taught by Addie Harper Senior and Junior. He is earning a growing reputation as a composer of music that pushes the boundaries of Scottish traditional music. He has received commissions from the Celtic Connections Festival, Blas Festival, Feis Rois and the Caithness Orchestra. James teaches traditional piano at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama. |
| I have chosen a track by Addie Harper and the Wick Band from the CD ‘Her Caithness Home’. (Harp Records 2000) The CD was a musical tribute to the Queen mother and the repertoire on the album has strong Caithness connections. The track is a set of four great reels that I was taught at music lessons when I was young and continue to play today. The first two tunes composed by the late Addie Harper and the last two reels by his son Addie Harper Jnr. The set starts with ‘The Barrowburn Reel’, one of Addie’s most popular compositions followed by ‘Walking on the Moon’. Addie was inspired to write this reel when the first person landed on the Moon in 1969. Both these reels have become part of the traditional musicians repertoire and are regularly performed and recorded by artists. Addie Jnr wrote ‘Stephanie Manola Harper's Reel’ for the birth of his daughter and ‘Wick Rotary Club's Compliments to Addie Harper Snr’ when the club presented his father with the Wick Citizen of the Year Award in 1997. I was lucky enough to be taught by both Addie Snr and Addie Jnr and they have both been a huge influence on my music. |
| Thagh mi aon bhon chlàr aig Addie Harper agus Còmhlan-Ciùil Inbhir Ùige, ‘ A Dachaigh an Gallaibh’. ( Harp Records 2000). Is e moladh-ciùil do Mhathair na Banrigh a bha seo, CD a tha a’ leantain gu dlùth ri dualchas Ghallaibh. Is e seata de cheithir ruidhlean a tha seo air a’ chlàr, a’ chiad is an dàrna fonn air a chur ri chèile le Addie Harper nach maireann agus an dà ruidhle mu dheireadh le mhac Addie Harper Òg.Tha an seata a’ tòiseachadh le ‘ Ruidhle Barrowburn’, aon de na chuir Addie ri chèile a chòrd ri iomadach neach agus an dèidh sin tha ‘ A’ Coiseachd air a’ Ghealaich’. Nuair a chaidh a’ chiad neach chun na gealaich sgrìobh Addie an ruidhle anns a’ bhliadhna 1969. Tha an dà ruidhle sin a-nis mar phàirt de na bhios neach-ciùil traidiseanta a’ cluich gu tric agus air a’ chlàradh le luchd-ealain.Sgrìobh Ady Òg ‘Ruidhle Stephanie Manola Harper’ a’ comharrachadh latha-breith a nighinn agus chomharraich Comann Rotary Inbhir Ùige obair Addie Harper fhèin leis an urram Prìomh Neach Inbhir Ùige a dheanamh dheth anns a’ bhliadhna 1997.Bha mise air leth fortanach gun robh mi air m’ oideachadh leis an dà Addie agus thug sin buaidh mhòr air a’ cheòl agam. |

Mod 2010 - Music Memory Store
Music Memory Store - Billy Miller.pdf
|
Music Memory Store Billy Miller |
| My history is Thursa boygie from Shore Street, Fisherbiggins. I was born in 1956, schooled in Thurso and trained in Dounreay as a mechanical technician. Then going on to work for BP as a Mechanical Supervisor offshore and then as a Mechanical Engineer in the Middle and Far East before returning home to work on the Thurso Lifeboat as the station mechanic in 1996. My Celtic connection comes from my wife Carol whose family originate from Kinlochbervie, we have 2 children Donna and Michael aged 28 and 26 who both live in Thurso. |
| An Ataireachd Ard (The surge of the sea) sung by Karen Matheson and Capercaillie is my choice for this clever project, but, it is the complete album of songs which evokes many memories for me. The first being the TV programme from which we get its title,‘The Blood is Strong’ screened some time ago in the late 80’s about the Highland Clearances, a fantastic insight into our culture and history directed by Ted Brocklebank. In my opinion the masterstroke was the accompanying music played by Capercaillie and sung by their lead singer Karen Matheson who has to be one of the finest singers of our times. Sean Connery says in Highlander “her throat has surely been touched by God”. This was my wakeup introduction to Gaeldom and Gaelic music and although I personally don’t speak our native tongue I love the music. A few years back now my wife Carol and I were over west at her family home in Kinlochbervie visiting her uncle Billy Mackay Polin and his late wife Sarah who both talked Gaelic as a first language. I brought with me my favourite Gaelic CD ‘The Blood is Strong’ and popped it on their CD player thinking this would impress them but, to my surprise and delight Aunt Sarah sat and sang every tune with lyrics, word for word, and there was me thinking I was bringing something new to the party! An Ataireachd Ard is my favourite track because it relates to the sea and reminds me of the many times we sailed around the beautiful Highlands and Islands of Scotland in the Royal National Lifeboard service and the many friends and hospitality we encountered along the way, in places such as Barra, Oban, Tobermory, Kyle, Portree, Lochinver, Orkney and Shetland. |
| Is e An Ataireachd Àrd air a sheinn le Karen Nic Mhathain a thagh mi airson a’ phròiseact innleachdach seo, ach tha an clàr gu lèir a’ cuimhneachadh iomadh rud dhomh. Is e fear dhiubh am prògram TV, ‘The Blood is Strong’, deasaichte lè Ted Brocklebank, mu na Fuadhdaichean Gàidhealach, a chaidh a chraoladh sna 80an a chuir sealladh àraid air ar n-eachdraidh is cultar. Nam mo bheachd-sa, b’ e an ceòl aig Capercaille a bha aig crìdhe a’ phrogram agus a chuir dreach shònraichte air. Is e Karen Nic Mhathain a bha na prìomh sheinneadar, mar a thuirt Sean Connery an Highlander “tha làmh Dhè sa ghuth aice”B’ e seo a dhùisg mi gu ceòl Gàidhlig agus a’ Ghàidhealtachd. Ged nach bruidhinn mi ar cànan, tha ùidh agam sa cheòl. Bliadhna neo dhà air ais bha mi fhèin is mo bhean Carol air a’ chost an ìar aig dachaigh a cuideachd an Cean Loch Biorbhaidh, Uilleam Mac Aoidh Polin agus a bhean nach maireann, Sara. Bha Gàidhlig aca lè chèile mar an ciad cànan. Thug mi leam CD mo mhiann, ‘The Blood is Strong’ agus chluich mi sin an dùil gun glacadh e an inntinn gu mòr. Ach ’s e a thachair gun do thòisich Sara a’ seinn gach òran, facal air an fhacal, agus mise an dùil gun tug mi rud neo-àbhaisteach thun na cuirm! An Ataireachd Àrd, ceòl mo mhiann. Carson? Tha gu bheil e ag innseadh mun mhuir a sheòl mi iomadach uair, timcheall Eileanan Alba agus tìr àlainn na Gàidhealtachd, nam obair còmhla ris an Royal National Lifeboat Service. Choinnich mi ri mòran dhaoine coibhneil agus fhuair mi aoigheachd am Barraigh, an t-Òban, Tobar Mhoire, An Caol, Port Rìgh, Loch an Inbhir, Arcaibh agus Sealtainn.. |

Ceann-La Mu Dheireadh Airson Tagraidhean a' Mhoid
Ceann-latha mu dheireadh airson tagraidhean a’ Mhòid Nàiseanta Rìoghail a’ tarraing dlùth
Le tagraidhean airson Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail 2010 a’ taomadh a-steach gach latha tha eagraichean a’ Mhòid, An Comunn Gàidhealach trang ag ullachadh airson tachartasan na bliadhna seo, a thèid a chumail ann an Gallaibh airson a’ chiad uair a-riamh.
Ged a tha mòran de thagraidhean air a thighinn a-steach mu thràth, tha An Comunn a’ dùileachadh gun tig cuid mhath fhathast ron cheann-latha ainmichte air 31 Cèitean agus tha iad a-rithist a’ cur an cuimhne dhaoine cho cudromach sa tha e gum faighear tagraidhean làn-lìonte a-steach ron àm.
Dhaingnich Seònaid NicDhòmhnaill, Stiùiriche a’ Mhòid Nàiseanta Rìoghail a’ bheachd seo ag ràdh, “Tha mi airson cur an cuimhne fharpaisich nach tèid gabhail ri tagraidhean anmoch neo neo-chrìochnaichte a gheibhear an-dèidh a’ cheann-latha sin. Bu mhath leam cuideachd cur an cuimhne fharpaisich mun atharrachadh san riaghailt airson a bhith a’ cur a-steach pìosan ciùil fèin-roghnaichte, a dh’fheumas a-nis a bhith a-staigh san oifis ro 30 Òg Mhìos.”
Ged nach deach am Mòd a chumail ann an Gallaibh a-riamh roimhe, tha e soilleir gu bheil an sgìre a’ cur fàilte air na tha ri thighinn. Thuirt Neach-gairm na Comataidh Eagrachaidh Ionadail, Raymond Bremner, “Tha sinn a’ faighinn deagh fhaireachdainn is taic gu ruige seo a thaobh na bhios a’ dol air adhart agus tha sinn toilichte a bhith a’ faicinn uidhir de bhuidhnean is dhaoine fa-leth bhon sgìre cho deònach pàirt a ghabhail ann an tachartas na bliadhna-sa.”
Chuir Iain Macleòid, Ceann-suidhe a’ Chomuinn Ghàidhealaich, cuideam air soirbheachas leantainneach prìomh-fhèis culturail na Gàidhlig le bhith ag ràdh, “A h-uile bliadhna tha sinn a’ faicinn fìor ùidh ann am farpaisean a’ Mhòid, gu sònraichte a-measg farpaisich bhon ghinealach òg againn. Bha sin gu math soilleir aig Mòd na bliadhna ‘n-uiridh san Òban nuair a chunnaic sinn àrdachadh susbainteach ann an tagraidhean bhon òigridh. Than an tachartasan gu h-iomlan a’ taisbeanadh uinneag de dheagh chothroman do shaoghal na Gàidhlig airson an cànan ‘s an cultair a chomharrachadh agus tha mi cinnteach gum bi Mòd Ghallaibh gu math soirbheachail.”

Celebrating Mod 2010
CELEBRATING THE MOD 2010
A growing series of CD’s will shortly be available to borrow from libraries in both Wick and Thurso. The project – MusicMemory Store – will feature people with local connections and raise the profile of the value of traditional and Gaelic music within the community and its relationship to the National Mòd 2010 which is being hosted in Caithness for the very first time from 8th to 16th October. A variety of local people have been asked to select a favourite traditional or Gaelic music track, which has a personal meaning for them and to share the music and the story with us. Alex Patience, Fringe Convenor with the local organising committee said “We hope that by making these stories and the music CDs available to borrow from the Caithness libraries we will encourage people to develop or showcase their interest in traditional and Gaelic music and to see some direct connections for them with the National Mòd.” Starting from the beginning of May, each week a new person’s story will be featured in the newspaper, on the website and their selected CD will be available in the libraries. This will run straight through October until the 2010 Mòd comes to an end. One of the many volunteers, mechanic for the Thurso Lifeboat, Billy Miller says, “An Ataireachd Ard (The Surge of the Sea) sung by Karen Matheson and Capercaillie is my choice for this clever project. because it relates to the sea and reminds me of the many times we sailed around the beautiful Highlands and Islands of Scotland in the Royal National Lifeboat service and the many friends and hospitality we encountered along the way.” In addition to making these CDs available via the libraries it is hoped to include some of the music and written pieces on the Mòd websites. Thèid Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail 2013 a chumail ann an Pàislig
Tha An Comunn Gàidhealach, buidheann-eagrachaidh A’ Mhòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail, air ainmeachadh aig a‘ choinneamh bhliadhnail aca air Dihaoine 19 Gearran 2010 gur ann am Pàislig a thèid Mòd 2013 a chumail. Is e seo a’ chiad uair a chaidh am Mòd a chumail ann am Pàislig.
Thuirt Iain Macleòid, Ceann-suidhe a’ Chomuinn Ghàidhealaich “Tha An Comunn air faighinn agus air beachdachadh air tagraidhean bho riaghaltasan ionadail a thaobh an teannachadh mòr san eaconomaidh a tha a’ bualadh orra aig an àm seo. Tha am Bòrd Stiùiridh air beachdachadh air an seo agus air co-dhùnadh gu bheil feum a-nis air a’ phròiseas dealbhaidh trì-bliadhna airson Am Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail a chur air chois, a leudachadh gu ceithir bliadhna gus barrachd cothrom a thoirt do riaghaltasan ionadail agus luchd-taic a’ Mhòid a bhith ag ullachadh airson an Fhèis. Le bhith ag ainmeachadh far an tèid tachartas 2013 air adhart, tha seo mar a ‘chiad cheum air an t-slighe gu bhith a’ stèidheachadh cearcall dealbhaidh nas fhaide.”
Chur Meur Phàislig den Chomuinn Ghàidhealaich tagradh a-steach gus aoigheachd a thoirt don Mhòd ann an 2011 agus a-rithist ann an 2012. Tha an dàil seo bho 2011 air cothrom a thoirt do luchd-eagrachaidh ionadail an fho-structair ionadail a neartachadh agus air cothrom a thoirt dhaibh conaltradh a chumail san eadar-ama le luchd-eagrachaidh Mòd 2008 san Eaglais Bhreac agus Mòd 2009 san Òban.
Bha an Comunn Gàidhealach airson a dhaingneachadh le bhith a’ toirt Mòd 2013 a Phàislig gum brosnaich seo fàs ann an luchd-labhairt is luchd-taic na Gàidhlig ann an Siorrachd Roinn Friù is ann an Glaschu le bhith gan toirt nas fhaisge air a’ Mhòd airson a’ chiad uair bho chaidh Mòd Àrd Ruigh air adhart ann an 1993. Chriochnaich Mgr Macleòid le bhith ag ràdh: “Tha sinn a’ faireachdainn gu bheil uallach oirnn am Mòd a thoirt gu na coimhearsnachdan Gàidhlig a tha a’ fàs air feadh na h-Alba, a bharrachd air coimhearsnachdan sa Ghàidhealtachd is sna h-Eileanan. Tha fichead bliadhna ro fhada bho nach robh Mòd ann an Iar-mheadhan na h-Alba agus tha mi cinnteach gun cur a h-uile duine fàilte air a’ Mhòd seo.”
Sheall measadh eaconamach a rinnear air Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail 2009 gun fhritheal barrachd air 8,500 luchd-turais air Mòd an Òbain 2009. Chaidh am buannachd eaconamach don sgìre a mheasadh aig còrr is £2.3 millean agus gu robhas a’ faighinn fìor bhuannachd de £14 a-mach às a h-uile £1 a bhathas a’ cur ris an tachartas.

An Comunn Gàidhealach (Falkirk Branch) give donation to Falkirk Junior Gaelic Choir
The Falkirk Branch of An Comunn Gàidhealach (The Highland Association) this week presented Falkirk Junior Gaelic Choir with a cheque for £750 to assist with their fundraising efforts in the run-up to this year's Royal National Mod.The choir has been established in Falkirk for well over forty years and have worked hard at promoting the Gaelic language and culture in the area. They have a proud record of success at provincial and National Mods and are the only Junior Gaelic Choir to have attended every National Mod since they were founded. The choir had a very successful year again in 2008 at the Royal National Mod held in their home town of Falkirk.
The cheque, presented to choir member Katie Whitfield by Provost Pat Reid, treasurer of the local An Comunn Gàidhealach branch, will help the junior choir purchase the Falkirk District tartan for all the choir members.
Mary Ann Brown, Treasurer of Falkirk Junior Gaelic Choir and the choir's Gaelic tutor said: The choir members and parents are very grateful to An Comunn Gàidhealach (Falkirk) for this generous donation. At present we are busy preparing for the Royal National Mod which is to be held in Oban this year. We are hoping to have the choir members all wearing the Falkirk District tartan at this year's National Mod."
Councillor Angus MacDonald, Chairman of An Comunn Gàidhealach (Falkirk Branch) said: "Over the years Falkirk Junior Gaelic Choir members have been excellent ambassadors for Falkirk District, so it is with great pleasure that we award this donation to the choir to help with their plans to purchase the Falkirk tartan. I am sure the choir will continue to go from strength to strength and we look forward to seeing future successes at provincial and National Mods."Published: 08 Jun 2009
