Largs Branch History
The Largs Branch of An Comunn Gàidhealach was formed in November 1938 when a group of local people got together and decided to form a branch of the Highland Association. These were dark days in more ways than one, as during the war years, the branch had to decide on dates for their meetings dependent on whenever the moon was at its fullest in order to provide some light for travel during the blackouts.
The branch prospered and provided financial and other assistance to members of the branch involved in the armed forces. In the 50's the branch reached its peak in memberships with more than 140 members and their ceilidhs and slide shows were well attended. The branch was successful in bidding for the National Mòd in 1956 and again in 1965. However throughout the 80's the membership fell drastically with support from the town diminishing.
Sadly in 1985, the branch ceased functioning and in 1992 it was wound up. In 1994 the local MP Brian Wilson started a campaign to bring the Mòd back to Largs , although this bid was unsuccessful, losing out to Blairgowrie for the 1996 Mòd. The campaign members were not all disheartened however and decided that if the branch could be revived that Largs would stand a good chance of holding a Mòd in future years. Again with the backing of Brian Wilson and North Ayrshire Council the branch was strong enough to bid successfully for the 2002 Mòd. Under the leadership of John Angus MacLeod as Mòd Convenor, a Local Mòd Committee was formed and the result was another great Mòd for Largs. The branch continues to run functions in support of the aims of An Comunn and passed their 70th anniversary in 2008. However numbers have fallen again and the branch would welcome anyone wishing to join and support them.
The branch have donated The Largs Trophy to the Mòd which has been contested every year at the Mòd since 2002 ,competition 279 for solo self accompaniment of 2 Gaelic songs.
